How to escape from a canyon - This lesson covers key techniques for safe canyon progression, including climbing without bolting in emergency situations. The leader must carefully select an escape route, prioritizing weak lines that may offer natural anchors like rocks and shrubs. The belaying process involves placing protection points early, using dynamic belaying methods (e.g., Munter hitch), and ensuring fall impact is minimized. The leader should always secure bombproof anchors and distribute load across multiple points. Teammates progress by removing protection points as they climb, ensuring proper tension and belaying practices. Climbing in a canyon requires careful anchor management, attention to climbing holds, and energy conservation techniques to reduce fall risks.
